Why Choose a NATO Watch Strap?

The NATO strap is one of the most popular upgrades among watch enthusiasts — a favorite on field watches and vintage tool watches alike. It's a one-piece design: a single strip of nylon pulls through behind the watch case rather than mounting in two separate halves, so your watch stays put even if a spring bar fails.

That failsafe is no accident. The one-piece NATO strap traces back to the British Ministry of Defense's G-10 specification, issued in the 1970s to keep a soldier's watch secure in the field. The original G-10 shipped in 20mm Admiralty Grey — and that same field-proven design lives on in all of our NATO straps today.

The distinctive Y-strap adds a second layer of security: an extra length of nylon runs behind the case, stopping the watch from sliding or slipping off as you put it on.

Our classic one-piece nylon straps use tightly woven fibers that resist stretching, fading, and odor — substantial without feeling stiff.

Seat Belt Nylon

Seat belt nylon has a smoother, shinier surface with a tighter, silk-like feel — a step up in refinement for dress-casual wear. Where standard nylon is matte and textured, seat belt nylon leans polished.

Built for traditional mechanical and quartz watches, the single-pass design covers the caseback — ideal for a classic timepiece, less so for a smartwatch with biometric sensors. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install a NATO strap?

NATO straps thread through the spring bars of your watch. Here's the quick version:

Thread the main strap through the watch's spring bars, behind the watch
Pull the end of the main strap through the stainless steel ring at the end of the shorter "Y-strap"

The NATO strap seems really long. Is that normal?

Yes! The extra length is how NATO straps are designed to fit. The excess is meant to be tucked or folded under the strap — it's part of the classic military strap look.

What's the Y-strap failsafe feature?

Our classic military straps have a Y-strap design that provides extra security. It secures the watch from behind, preventing it from sliding off the strap while putting it on your wrist. It's a feature borrowed from the original military design.

How do I know what size watch strap I need?

You'll need to measure the lug width of your watch — that's the space between the two small posts (lugs) where the strap attaches to the watch case. Lay your watch flat, remove the old strap if possible, and use a ruler or caliper to measure that gap in millimeters. Common sizes are 18mm, 20mm, and 22mm. We also offer 16mm, 19mm, 21mm, 23mm, and 24mm widths in some straps. If you're not sure, just send us a message with your watch's make and model and we'll help you figure it out.

Why doesn't this strap come with spring bars?

Unlike quick release straps, NATO straps use your watch's existing spring bars to attach to the watch by threading through them. If your watch does not have spring bars, we sell quick release spring bars separately that you can use. These have the added advantage of being able to quickly switch between quick release and NATO straps.

Why don't you recommend NATO straps for use with smart watches?

Most smart watches have biometric sensors on the back that would be blocked by the NATO strap going behind the watch. We created our Quick Release Nylon and Quick Release Seat Belt Nylon straps to give the people the traditional NATO strap look with full functionality for use with a smart watch.

How do I clean my NATO strap?

These straps are built to get dirty. When it's time for a refresh, hand wash with mild soap and warm water, then air dry. The nylon dries quickly and won't shrink or warp.

Can I wear these in water?

Absolutely. Our NATO straps are fully submersible and dry quickly. The premium woven nylon resists mildew, making these ideal for swimming, diving, or just getting caught in the rain. The hardware is marine grade stainless steel that won't corrode with normal use.

How thick are the NATO straps?

Our NATO straps are approximately 1.2mm thick.
